Dr Ayres to retire as Director-General
Dr Marie-Louise Ayres commended for visionary leadership by Library Council

After a distinguished career spanning nearly 25 years at the National Library of Australia, including the past nine years as Director-General, Dr Marie-Louise Ayres FAHA has announced her intention to retire in April 2026.
Dr Ayres has held several senior roles at the Library, building collections, digital access and national services across multiple roles. Throughout her tenure, she has been a tireless advocate for increasing the prominence and accessibility of the Library’s collections, most notably through the development and expansion of the online archive Trove.
Under her leadership, the Library has undergone significant transformation, strengthening its national and international standing and deepening its commitment to connecting all Australians with their national collections.
Chair of the National Library Council, Distinguished Professor Larissa Behrendt AO, commended Dr Ayres’ legacy:
“Dr Ayres’ contribution to the National Library has been nothing short of transformative. Her vision and leadership have elevated the Library’s role in connecting Australians with their shared history and culture.”
“Marie-Louise has led the Library with exceptional dedication and insight, ensuring our collections are not only preserved but made accessible to all.”
“Her passion for the Library’s mission and her tireless advocacy for Trove and other digital initiatives have left an indelible mark.”
Dr Ayres will support the Library Council and Department as they recruit the next Director-General, and her contribution to the Library will be formally recognised closer to her retirement.
