Now online: South Korean community newspaper the Hanho Times
Newspapers have long been a vital way for migrant communities to foster connection and share stories about their new home, while keeping up to date with news from their places of origin. One such newspaper was the Hanho Tʻaimzŭ, or Hanho Times, a South Korean community newspaper published in Sydney from 1985 to 1995.
Thanks to funding from the Korean Cultural Centre (KCC) in Sydney, all issues of this newspaper have now been made available to explore online through Trove.

The 5th year anniversary of the Hanho Times
In January 1990, the Hanho Times celebrated 5 years of the newspaper with a special issue. Within this was a letter written to the paper by then Prime Minister Bob Hawke, congratulating them on the accomplishment.
It gives me great pleasure to send my warmest congratulations to the members of the Australian Korean community on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the publication of the Hanho Times.
Since its establishment in 1985, the Hanho Times has done much to foster the spirit of community amongst Koreans in keeping them in touch with events in Korea while also informing them about their new country. The fact that the Hanho Times is now celebrating its fifth anniversary shows that this role is much appreciated.
I believe that newspapers such as the Hanho Times make a vital-contribution to our multicultural society.
Korean participation at the Sydney Royal Easter show
Later that same year, the newspaper shared how 'Korea has been invited as the feature nation to the Sydney Royal Easter Show (6 April 1990 – 17 April 1990), the largest Australian event.' With Korean traditional performances, crafts and foods planned, the event was 'expected to promote economic and cultural exchange between Korea and Australia, as well as share Korean culture with Australia.'

Direct flights between Sydney and Seoul
An important story concerning travel and tourism between Korea and Australia was when Korean Air officially announced that they will begin operating direct flights between Sydney and Seoul. This was featured in the Hanho Times along with photographs from the launch party.

Advertisement for local businesses
Like any newspaper the Hanho Times shared advertisements, many of which were for local Korean grocery shops, restaurants, and academic schools. Just one example is this advertisement for Han-Ho Korean Grocery in Redfern, Sydney from the very first issue of the newspaper.

Current events
Unsurprisingly for a migrant community newspaper, news and events related to immigration were regularly featured. This included a summary of the National Immigration Outlook Conference that took place in Melbourne in 1990.
The National Immigration Outlook Conference was held on November 14th in Melbourne. At the conference, the controversy over Australia's immigration policy continued, and Prime Minister Hawke requested the National Population Council to examine all relevant matters, including the impact of population growth on the economy, environment, human services, infrastructure, social equity, and international obligations, with a report due by September.
