Celebrating World Digital Preservation Day
If you follow the Library on social media, you may have seen videos showcasing some of our work to preserve collections: making custom boxes to keep fragile books and objects safe, scanning historical documents to make digital versions accessible through Trove, and undertaking careful, reversible repairs to damaged photographs and artworks.
But how do we care for items that come to us on a USB drive, floppy disk, or as a digital file like a PDF?
Our Digital Preservation team works to ensure items received in a digital format (sometime called 'born digital' items) are cared for just like our physical items so they can be accessed by future generations of Australians.
The theme for the 2026 Digital Preservation Day is 'Save Our Stories (SOS): Our Digital Heritage in Danger'.
Each year, the Digital Preservation Coalition website invites organisations worldwide to share details about their digital preservation activities. This could be in the form of a blog, a hosted event and other creative initiatives.
This year, the Library's Digital Preservation team has contributed a follow-up to their 2025 blog on preserving access to published CD-ROMs in our collection: We will WARC you: preserving access to published CD-ROMs at NLA - Digital Preservation Coalition
