A new take on ‘The Man from Snowy River’ to be released by NLA Publishing

Published on 06 Mar 2025

Beloved children’s author Dianne Wolfer presents a captivating new work inspired by the iconic Australian poem, The Man from Snowy River by Banjo Paterson. In this poetic response, Wolfer tells the story from the perspective of Colt, a spirited horse navigating the rugged beauty of the Snowy Mountains. Readers will be drawn into Colt’s world, exploring his experiences as he encounters nickering mares and a rearing stallion. The narrative poses intriguing questions: How did Colt escape the man? What did he see, feel and smell as he charged through the bush?

Illustrated with exquisite collages by Erica Wagner, the book conveys the depth of emotion with great tenderness, perfectly complementing Wolfer’s evocative text. Together, they transport readers into the heart of the Snowy Mountains, creating an immersive experience.

The book also includes the full text of Paterson’s original poem, along with engaging information about the history of bush poetry, a biography of Banjo Paterson and insights into the brumbies of the Snowy Mountains. This comprehensive collection promises to be a new Australian classic in the making.

Dianne Wolfer is the 2024 winner of the Western Australian Premier’s Literary Award for Children’s Book of the Year, while Erica Wagner has been honoured with the 2024 CBCA New Illustrator Award. This collaboration is set to enchant readers of all ages.

The Colt from Old Regret will be released in April 2025.

A book launch event will be held at the National Library on 5 April, featuring a read-through of The Colt from Old Regret and a children’s crafting session. See further information and bookings.
