Deadly Dialogues: Bringing Them Home Oration with Kutcha Edwards

Kutcha Edwards delivers the inaugural Bringing Them Home Oration.

The Bringing Them Home Oral History project ran between 1998 and 2002. The project was established by the National Library in response to the first recommendation of Bringing Them Home: Report of the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from Their Families by the Commonwealth of Australia in 1997.

Australians from across the nation told us their experiences of the laws and policies which created the Stolen Generations. First Australians people who were taken away from their families or had children forcibly removed, shared their intimate stories over hundreds of hours of recordings. These are held in the national collection to preserve them on the public record. In commemoration of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who found the strength to share their stories, the National Library invites you to join us for our next Deadly Dialogue event, the Inaugural Bringing Them Home Oration with Kutcha Edwards.

About Kutcha Edwards

A color portrait of Kutcha Edwards, pensive, with his hand resting on his chin, looking directly at the camera.

Kutcha is a proud Mutti Mutti, Yorta Yorta, Nari Nari songman and storyteller. As one of Australia’s most respected singer/songwriters, his music and community work has made him a legend.

Kutcha has a profound impact on audiences and the powerful truth telling of his journey as a survivor of the Stolen Generations is transformative. He is able to share hard truths in such a gentle way and traverse a range of topics, through the deeply personal to some hilarious yarns.

Through the voice and art of music Kutcha shares his lived experiences and mesmeric music to create connections across cultures, generations, and spaces. As a Songman, Elder and iconic voice for his people, Kutcha explains, “music is not what I do; it is who I am”.
