Workshop: Capturing your family stories session 1

Learn how to record your loved ones’ stories and preserve their voices for the future.

In this beginner-level workshop you will learn the basics for capturing family histories through interview. Claudia Craig and Gerard Callinan bring many years’ experience interviewing and working with diverse subjects in oral history and broadcasting spaces. They will teach you the basic skills you need to record and preserve successful interviews, as well as share the pros and cons of easy-to-use recording technology.

You will be provided with course materials and practical tips for conducting oral history interviews. and have an opportunity to practice crafting great questions under Claudia and Gerard’s guidance.

This workshop will be repeated on Saturday 15th August – 2pm – 4pm

About Claudia Craig

Claudia’s passion for capturing stories about people began as a ten-year old when she recorded her Spanish grandmother’s history on cassette tape. After a deviation practicing law, Claudia returned to storytelling working as a journalist and broadcaster, as well as in oral history and creative spaces.

Claudia is the Vice President of Oral History Victoria where she supports the provision of training and resources to oral historians. She has conducted interviews of Wutjubaluk and Gunditjmara descendants of Australia’s first overseas cricket team and is currently working with Professor Peter Monteath of Flinders University on the Adelaide War Crimes Oral History Project. Claudia co-produces the national environmental justice programme Earth Matters at 3CR community radio in Naarm/Melbourne.

About Gerard Callinan

Gerard Callinan is a former broadcaster with ABC Gippsland and has been working in the area of family and organisational history for 12 years. His work includes recording stories for the Paynesville Memories project as well as recordings to mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Sale Hospital in Gippsland.
