Dr Shine Choi has focused on North Korea’s relations with the Third World. This anti-colonial and anti-imperial group of countries gained global visibility through the 1955 Bandung Conference. It was later supported by the establishment of the Non-Aligned Movement in 1961 and the Tricontinental Conference in 1966. 

This research explores how diplomatic relations are forged in and through subjective texts and visuals.

Dr Shine Choi is a 2020 National Library of Australia Fellow in Japan Studies, supported by the Harold S. Williams Trust.

About Dr Shine Choi

Dr Shine Choi teaches Political Theory and International Relations in New Zealand. Her research has focused on how an illiberal state like North Korea creates and navigates international politics.

Dr Choi is a co-editor of the book series, Creative Interventions in Global Politics (2023) with Rowman and Littlefield. She is also an editor for International Feminist Journal of Politics (2022 - 2025).
