World War 1: 1917
Ypres offensive - Western Front (1917)
The Ypres Offensive (also known as the Third Battle of Ypres or Passchendaele) took place on the Western Front in 1917. The goal of the offensive was to break through German lines and capture the crucial Belgian ports, which were used by the enemy for supplies.
Fighting was intense, with soldiers battling through thick mud and difficult conditions. Australian troops played a key role in the offensive, especially at the Battle of Menin Road, where they helped secure important ground. Despite some successes, the offensive resulted in heavy casualties and minimal territorial gains. The battle is remembered for its harsh conditions and the high cost of human life.
