Australian newspaper clippings
What you can find in the Library
We have a collection of newspaper clippings files containing articles from many Australian national, regional and local newspapers from a time period largely not covered by online newspaper services.

How to search and find items
The content of the clippings files varies but may include a cutting or an original article from a newspaper.
In the case of older articles, you will generally find an index reference to where the article can be found, such as the title of the newspaper, title of the article, the year of publication and date. All index references have been compiled from Library material, so you can request specific items through the catalogue.
Cuttings fall into 5 distinct sequences.
Contains cuttings and references to articles on significant Australians in all walks of life.
The sequence ceased in 2000. All biographical cuttings files have been catalogued and can be requested online via the catalogue.
- Search the catalogue for the name of the person and the words 'biographical cuttings'
- For example: Norman Lindsay biographical cuttings
- Request to view the file at the Library or request a copy.

Contains cuttings and references to book reviews by Australian authors, published in Australia and overseas.
The sequence ceased in 2000.
Authors range from significant to less known and include many reviews of works by immigrant authors.
Files are predominantly for works of fiction although some non-fiction cuttings can be found. Many of the authors in this sequence also contain a separate file in the Biographical sequence so it is useful to request files from both sequences as the content may be complementary.
This sequence is the only one not yet fully available to request online.
Search the catalogue using the name of the author and the words 'book review cuttings’
- For example: Rae Else-Mitchell book review cuttings
OR use the catalogue record for the entire collection if a specific file cannot be found

You can also find valuable material on Australian authors online in AustLIT: The Australian Literature Resource available through our eResources portal.
