The Library was established under the National Library Act 1960, which defines the Library's role, corporate governance and financial management framework.

The volunteer program offers the community an opportunity to play an active role in supporting and promoting the work of the Library.

The Library is committed to promoting standards of conduct and behaviours that are required of all APS employees by the APS Values, Employment Principles and Code of Conduct. 

The Library provides interlibrary loan and document delivery services to libraries, organisations and individuals in Australia and overseas.

Our aim is to ensure Australians have access to a national collection of library material to enhance learning, knowledge creation, enjoyment and understanding of Australian life and society.

The Heritage Strategy aims to achieve the conservation of the cultural heritage significance of the National Library of Australia.
