French migration and cultural presence
French settlement in Australia began soon after the arrival of the First Fleet. Unlike some other migrant communities, French migrants typically arrived as individuals rather than in large groups. Many became landowners, merchants and winemakers.
French migration increased after World War II, and again during the late 1960s and early 1970s following the independence of former French colonies in Africa and Asia. Today, French businesses continue to thrive in Australia, supported by the popularity of French products and services.
Le Courrier Australien, first published in 1892, was Australia’s first foreign-language newspaper. Although printing ceased in 2011, a bilingual online version was relaunched in 2016.
Advertising in languages other than English was often used to attract both local communities and potential migrants overseas. The Library holds a collection of French-language postcards, including one that features an advertisement for the Aiguebelle chocolate company. The postcard shows a man reading a newspaper, with the Australian flag in the top right corner and a Western Australian postage stamp with a black swan in the bottom left. The reverse side includes general information about Australia in French, along with a paragraph promoting the chocolate company.
