Pacific Peoples in Australia Project | National Library of Australia (NLA)

Pacific Peoples in Australia Project

We want to connect with peoples of diverse Pacific and South Sea Islander heritage living in Australia. We’re looking to collaborate with communities to listen, learn and seek guidance for this 3-year project. The Pacific Peoples in Australia Project will document contemporary stories and voices as well as the important contributions of Pacific people to Australian history.

How you can help

We’re in the early stages of planning the project. We’d like to hear and learn from you about what is important for us to collect to represent your stories and experiences. We would appreciate you completing this 10-minute survey to help better inform our project and learn more about how you might like to connect with us.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss the project with a curator, please email select@nla.gov.au

Why are we doing this project?

The Pacific diaspora in Australia refers to the diverse communities of people with ancestral ties to the Pacific who have settled in Australia over generations. This diaspora has grown significantly since the mid-20th century. In 2021, the population of the Pacific diaspora in Australia was 415,033, making the Pacific population 1.6% of the total Australian population.

We know that people with Pacific heritage have contributed significantly to Australia’s historical and cultural landscape. We want to make sure your stories are heard and documented in our collection, for future generations.

Sharing our collections

We are growing our collection of both physical and digital materials relating to Pacific nations. Below are some highlights already in our collection.

View digital collections on Trove or visit in-person to view items in our reading rooms. We also have online resources to help you with your research, including our Pacific Research Guide. More digital collections are available on Digital Pasifik.
