Reproductions and interlibrary loans for individuals
Copies Direct
Copies Direct provides a digital reproduction service for articles, book chapters, photographs, pictures, maps, manuscripts, music, sound recordings from our collections, as well as the collections of other libraries. We offer Copies Direct services in accordance with our Interlibrary Loan Policy.
Please note copyright and other rights restrictions may restrict the amount of copying that can be done. If we are unable to adequately identify the item that you require, we will cancel your order and refer you to our Ask a Librarian service for assistance.
Due to major building activity some of our collections are temporarily unavailable. This means that some Copies Direct orders will not be fulfilled. Please check the catalogue carefully to find out if your order is impacted. Find out more: Temporary changes to collection access.
There’s so much to discover inside the National Library’s collection.
Books, newspapers, ephemera, maps, manuscripts, music scores, oral histories, pictures, posters, even special items relevant to your family’s history.
And if you can’t make it to the Library, we can send you a copy to keep.
Simply browse and fall into a world of wonder.
If you’d like a copy of an item, check the copyright status, and if all clear we will email you a copy.
To shop, just add the item to your shopping cart. Follow the prompts and pay online.
We will only charge you once we have confirmed and we can send you a copy. Check our website for delivery times – as some requests will take a few days.
Take a look - onsite and online.
Reproductions from our collection
- Search the catalogue for items held by the Library.
- Check the 'copyright status' field in the catalogue record. If it says:
- 'Out of copyright', then yes, we can copy the whole item and email it to you.
- 'In copyright', there will be limits on what we can send you. Generally, for items in copyright we can copy one chapter or 10% for research and study.
- 'Copyright undetermined', either Ask a Librarian or place your order anyway and we'll let you know if we cannot supply it.
- Place your order by clicking 'Order a Copy' in the catalogue record.
- Fill in the online form. The cost will be automatically calculated and you can pay online. You will not be charged if the material cannot be supplied.
Reproductions from the collections of other libraries
- Use Trove, WorldCat or any other library catalogue to check the details of the material you are interested in.
- Open Describe item and add to cart, under the heading Order Form for Inter-Library Loan, click on 'Select Loan Form' and enter your request details.
Borrowing from another library
This service is available if you are able to visit the National Library in Canberra. The material must be used in the Main Reading Room at the Library.
- Use Trove, WorldCat or any other library catalogue to check the details of the material you are interested in.
- If you are onsite at the National Library, you can locate and order material directly through Libraries Australia via the 'Get this Item' button.
- From Describe item and add to cart, choose the 'select loan form' and complete the form.
We may not be able to borrow or reproduce some material due to preservation, copyright or other permission restrictions.
