Our standard selection process usually consists of an:

  • application
  • interview
  • referee check.

Eligibility requirements

To apply for a job with us, you must be an Australian citizen. 

You will also need to: 

Security clearances

The candidate pack will state if a security clearance is required for a role. If required, you must be able to obtain and maintain that level of clearance.

Qualifications

Some of our roles require formal qualifications. If you list any formal qualifications on your application, we may ask you to provide evidence before starting.

Prepare your application

Your application will need to include:

  • a statement 
  • a resume outlining your career history and qualifications
  • contact details of 2 referees.

RecruitAbility

We participate in the RecruitAbility scheme. This means if you're a person with disability, you will advance to a further stage in the recruitment process. 

To participate, make sure you: 

  • opt in to RecruitAbility in the application form
  • declare you have a disability
  • meet the minimum requirements of the vacancy advertised.

You must submit your completed online application by the closing date and time.

Remember, you need to submit your application through our jobs portal. We do not accept email applications.

After you submit, you will receive an email notification to confirm we have received your application. 

Temporary employment register

Our employment register is for non-ongoing (temporary) jobs that are short-term or project-based for up to 18 months. Jobs may be filled on a full-time, part-time or casual basis, depending on business requirements. 

Jobs at all classification levels are available in the following areas:

  • Collections Management - preservation, cataloguing, acquisitions, special collections management, curatorship, archivists
  • Library Services - reference services, reading room floor, document supply services, collection retrieval, research
  • Digital and IT Services - IT support and operations, Trove, digitisation, digital preservation, web development, graphic design
  • Corporate services and administration - finance, human resources, executive support, building management, records management
  • Exhibitions and outreach - education, marketing, editorial/publishing, exhibition installation.

All registrations expire on 30 June each year. At this time, you will be invited to renew your interest in the register.
