Performing arts research guide
In the collection
We hold one of Australia’s largest collections of performing arts materials. These archives document the long and rich history of live performance in Australia, and Australians performing overseas.
The collections are an important record of the work of prominent individuals and organisations that have shaped our performing arts, from companies, actors, dancers, singers, directors, choreographers, costume designers, production designers, agents and promoters. They cover a range of performing arts including dance, theatre, musical theatre and opera, circus, illusion and festivals.

How to find information
These tips will help you search for and access material from our collections.
Search the catalogue
Our catalogue includes physical collections, eResources, digitized material, audio recordings, finding aids for manuscripts and selected PROMPT collections. Use keywords or search by title, author or subject.
Find out more about how to use the catalogue.
Enter the performer's name into the catalogue search box. The name may appear in the title, creator field, or subject field. For more resources, search by both the performer's birth name and stage name.
For broader searches, try searching by occupation:
Company names may appear as subjects or creators/contributors (for example, in this result for Australian Ballet).
Start with broad searches without limits. For company histories, directories, and annual reports, search for the company name and limit results by 'Format' to 'Journal'.
Remember, company names can change over time, so try different versions.
To find materials unique to the performing arts, search the catalogue using the name of the artist, company, production, or venue followed by 'PROMPT' and 'programs'. For example, "Bangarra Dance theatre programs (Indigenous)".
Use terms like 'broadside' or 'PROMPT scrapbook' for specific searches.
If you need help searching the PROMPT collection, use the PROMPT finding aid.
PROMPT material is arranged predominantly by:
- individual artist (like Nellie Melba)
- company (like Bangarra Dance Theatre)
- entrepreneur's name (like Garnet H. Carroll)
Tip: Programmes are catalogued by collection rather than item, meaning folders may include several programmes and related ephemera from productions over several years.
Browse by subject
Use the catalogue to browse by title, author, subject, or call number. Select 'subjects' from the drop-down menu and type a subject (e.g., 'performing arts'). Start with broad subjects first:
- Performing arts
- Dance
- Music
- Torres Strait Islanders – Music
- Theatre
- Circus
The catalogue will suggest relevant subject headings. Open a record and view the assigned subject headings to find related items.
For example, a subject search for 'circus australia' will display items with the subject Circus--Australia. These items may also show more subject headings that you can explore including:
- Circus -- Australia -- History
- Circus -- Australia -- Photographs
- Circus -- Australia -- Anecdotes
- Circus -- Australia -- Posters
- Circus -- Comic books, strips
You can also browse the Arts and Humanities category, which includes the Performing Arts sub-category in eResources.
Case studies
Do you have any programs which include the soprano opera singer Jean Campbell who performed with the J.C. Williamson Company in the 1940s? I live in Brisbane so I can't visit the Library.
The J.C Williamson Ltd Archive is a very large collection. The archive has been divided, and the programs form part of the J.C. Williamson Theatres material in the PROMPT collection. Material in these collections is not catalogued at item level, however there are comprehensive online finding aids which are arranged by sequence:
Jean Campbell's name appears in the finding aid for the Opera, comic opera and operetta collection of theatre programs where she is listed as a performer in the 5 productions below:
- La Boheme (1948) / Giacomo Pu'ccini Performances part of J.C. Williamson Grand Opera Season Tivoli Theatre, Sydney
- Il Barbiere di Siviglia (1948) / Gioachino Rossini Performances part of J.C. Williamson Grand Opera Season Tivoli Theatre, Sydney
- Rigoletto (1949) / Giuseppe Verdi Single performance – 22 June His Majesty's Theatre, Brisbane (Queensland) J.C. Williamson Grand Opera Season

However, where items have been digitised, you can select the 'View Online' button at the top of the catalogue record, or you can use our Copies Direct service to request copies and have them sent to you via mail or email.
To place a Copies Direct order, simply click on the 'Order a Copy' button that is located at the top of the catalogue record and follow the prompts to complete the online order form.
What collections do you have that specifically focus on circus and travelling performances in Australia? I'm particularly interested in early twentieth-century material.
